An impressive two-way performance from Brian Butcher led the Rays to a 10-8 win Sunday over the Yankees, as Butcher came up huge at the dish and on the mound. Butcher got on base two times in the game for the Rays. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He singled in the second inning. Butcher worked out of four tricky spots for the Rays. He pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed no earned runs on three hits. Butcher faced his most difficult moment in the seventh inning.
Both squads had things going at the plate, tallying 18 runs and 28 hits, including six extra base hits. The teams traded runs for most of the contest, leading to six lead changes in the game.
The Rays finally managed to grab the lead after a strong fifth inning. The Rays went up for good on a two-run single by Isaac Shepherd off Jon Gutierrez, plating Charles "Chuck" Rivera and Dean Fulton.
The Yankees jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Roy Williams started the rally for the Yankees with a single. A single by Gutierrez then moved Williams from first to third. Jeff Arroyo singled, scoring Williams.
The Rays matched their two-run second inning with two more in the third. In the second, the Rays scored on an RBI single by Butcher, plating Carlos Noriega.
The lead was the Rays' to lose after fifth inning. More runs came home on a two-run single by Fulton and a bases loaded walk.
