Again the Padres jump out with a good start and the Pirates chip away and take the lead. The Pirates defense stepped up big twice along with timely hitting got the win.

Mariners break open an 8-8 game after four with 3 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth, and 6 in the seventh. The Rays put a scare into the M's in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, roaring back from a 19-8 deficit to come to within 6.

Tony Scarpa ignites the crucial seventh inning for the M's with a towering, leadoff double to right-center, for his first extra-base hit in nearly three years as a Mariner.

Emergency starter Mark Rodriguez lasts into the seventh for the win.


Eleven hits weren't enough for the Rays as it lost a shootout, 19-13 in seven innings, to the Mariners on Sunday at Soquel.

Bryce Shepherd racked up three RBIs on two hits for the Rays. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning.

The Mariners pounded the Rays pitching, as six hitters combined for 14 hits, 10 RBIs and 15 runs scored.

The Rays quickly matched the Mariners' strong inning with a three-run inning of their own in the first. The Rays scored on an RBI double by John Culbertson, a wild pitch, and an RBI single by Shepherd.

The Mariners scored three runs in each of the second, fourth and fifth. In the second, the Mariners scored on an RBI double by Camarena, plating Macias.

The Rays answered the Mariners' top inning with four runs of their own in the third. The Rays scored on a two-run double by Shepherd, a sacrifice fly by Patrick Battiste, and Carlos Noriega scored on a passed ball.

The Rays scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut their deficit to six. A wild pitch, a two-run double by Jamal Fulton, and a two-run double by Noriega fueled the Rays' comeback. #25 ended the game by getting Brian Butcher to fly out.

Emergency reliever Ignascio "Bobby" Camarena took over for ailing starter Angel Aguirre and allowed just one run total over 6 innings. Camarena was backed by some rock-solid defense, highlighted by a leaping grab of a line drive by emergency third baseman Chris Calub, which was thrown over to first and scooped expertly by first baseman Tony Scarpa for an exhilarating double play.

The M's received hits out of their first six hitters, and seven out of their first eight in the first inning for 5 runs before the Rays starter settled down and shut down the M's through the 5th.

Luis Macias, playing on one leg and barely able to run, slammed a double in the 5th to set up an insurance run, finishing his day at 5-6 with 2 RBI, 5 Runs, and a HBP.


John Culbertson did all he could to give the Rays a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past the Mariners, as the Rays lost 6-3 in seven innings at Soquel on Sunday.

The Rays were led by Culbertson's hitting. Culbertson went 2-3 and scored one run. He singled in the first inning and doubled in the third inning.

In the top of the first, the Rays grabbed the early lead, 2-0. Gilbert Ramirez doubled to ignite the Rays' offense. A single by Culbertson then moved Ramirez from second to third. The scoreboard lit up again for the Rays when Culbertson scored on an RBI single by Bryce Shepherd.

The Mariners never trailed after scoring five runs in the first on an RBI double by Camarena, a groundout by D Lorensen, two singles, and a wild pitch.

After pushing across one run in the top of the sixth, the Rays faced just a 5-3 deficit. An RBI single by Brian Butcher gave the Rays life. Leon Alcantar grounded out to end the Rays threat.

It didn't take long for the Mariners to respond as they scored one run of their own in the sixth. The Mariners scored on an RBI single by Aguirre.
